The thing the price tag does not tell you

Put the cheapest ounce on a menu next to the most expensive one and compare the two published lab figures. On most menus, including ours, the price rises several times over and the potency barely moves.

That is not a trick, and it is not an argument that the expensive flower is a waste of money. It is simply what the numbers say, and it tells you what you are actually paying for as the price climbs:

• Bud size. Bigger, denser flower costs more to produce and sells for more.
• Grow method. Indoor costs more to run than a light assisted greenhouse, which costs more than open sun.
• Terpene profile, nose and structure. The things that make one strain more distinctive than another, none of which show up in a THCA percentage.
• Rarity. Exotic genetics in short supply carry a premium regardless of what the lab report says.

What actually makes a cheap THCA ounce cheap

It is smalls rather than full-size buds

THCA smalls are the lower nodes off the same plants as the full-size flower. Same strain, same grow, same batch lab report, smaller buds. That is the entire difference. It is also the biggest single price lever in this category, and it is why this shop exists.

It was grown in a greenhouse or under light assist rather than indoors

Greenhouse flower uses sunlight with some climate control. Light assist supplements that sunlight with lamps to extend the growing window. Both cost substantially less to run than a fully sealed indoor facility, and that difference shows up in the price rather than in the lab report.

It is being rotated off the shelf

Clearance and sale flower is discounted because a new harvest is coming in, not because there is anything wrong with it. This is where the sharpest ounce prices come from, and the trade-off is that you take what is there rather than choosing. If freshness matters more to you than price, the fresh harvest shelf is the other end of the same decision.

What a cheap THCA ounce is not

How to check a cheap ounce before you buy it

• Match the COA to the batch. Not the strain, not last harvest. The compliance figure that matters is total delta-9 THC, which under the federal hemp programme must not exceed 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis. USDA publishes the testing guidelines that figure is measured against.
• Check the harvest date. Fresh harvest and clearance can sit at similar prices and they are different propositions. You should know which one you are buying.
• Check it arrives sealed. An ounce dries out faster than a pound because of the surface area to volume ratio, so packaging matters more at this size, not less.
• Do the per-gram maths yourself. Divide the price by 28. It is the only number that lets you compare one ounce against another once bag sizes and grades start varying.
• Check it can reach you. State rules vary and carriers add their own.

When to stop buying ounces

The ounce is the right size for trying a strain and the wrong size for supplying yourself. Once you know you like something, the per-gram cost drops at every rung above it.
